What is Narcan or Naloxone?
One of SafeRx’s means of addressing the opioid crisis in California is by reducing opioid overdose deaths through the provision of naloxone, a life-saving medication that reverses an opioid overdose, in its nasal spray formulation.
- What is Narcan?
Narcan is a medicated nasal spray that quickly reverses the effect of opioid drugs in the event of a bad reaction or overdose. Narcan is the brand name of the drug naloxone. - What kinds of opioids does Narcan work to reverse?
Narcan reverses the effects of all opioids – that includes pain pills like Norco, Oxycontin and Vicodin, pain patches like Duragesic, as well as heroin. - Why do I need Narcan in my home?
If you have a prescription for an opioid medication in your house, or if you come in regular contact with someone who uses pain pills or heroin, it is a good idea to have Narcan on hand as a safety measure. Narcan can be administered to anyone experiencing an overdose or poisoning by opioids, including young children and infants. - How safe is Narcan?
Narcan is very safe. If taken accidentally by someone who has not taken an opioid drug, it has no effect. - How do I obtain Narcan?
Ask your health care provider to prescribe Narcan when you get an opioid prescription, or if you come in regular contact with someone who uses pain pills or heroin. You can also obtain Narcan directly from participating pharmacists in Lake County (see table below). Narcan is also available for FREE directly from SafeRx – give us a call for more information.
